Will the Real ‘Entrepreneurial Managers’ Please Stand Up?

November 5, 2024 | CP Gurnani

How important is cultivating an entrepreneurial mindset within organizations?

Well, nobody will dispute it, but after spending a large part of my life mentoring entrepreneurs and high-performing teams, I can safely claim that it’s easier said than done.

In fast-growing startups, an entrepreneurial spirit is not just valuable—it’s essential for driving growth. And if you want to run your enterprise like a lean startup, you need a whole army of entrepreneurs—with a variety of valuable traits, but all aligned behind a single mission.

What are these traits? What makes a leader in your organization what I call an ‘entrepreneurial manager’? Read on.

Driving Innovation

Entrepreneurial managers are at the forefront of innovation. They are proactive, constantly scanning for new opportunities, and unafraid to take calculated risks to bring fresh ideas to life. This mentality is crucial in industries facing rapid change or disruption.

For example, a full 85% of startups cite “innovation” as their main growth driver. Prime examples of the day? Tesla and SpaceX.

Tesla’s rise from an industry newcomer to the world’s most valuable automaker, with a market cap of $800 billion, cannot—I repeat—cannot come to be without innovating.

As for SpaceX, did you see what they did recently? They’ve made a habit out of pushing the limits of what’s possible.

Adaptability and Resilience

Every new manager—and therefore, every startup—thinks of the current environment as volatile. Sorry to break it to you: Times have always been volatile. It’s the businesses and individuals that find adaptability and resilience that succeed in any time or era.

Entrepreneurial managers thrive in ambiguity and can pivot when challenges arise, turning potential setbacks into opportunities. Nearly half of all startups fail due to a lack of market need, but resilient leaders adapt and often pivot to new ideas.

Take Slack as a case in point: initially a gaming company, Slack pivoted when the team realized their internal communication tool had far greater potential. This flexibility, driven by entrepreneurial leadership, ultimately led to a $27.7 billion acquisition by Salesforce in 2021. It shows how an entrepreneurial mindset can lead to market-defining success.

The successful startup or organization views failure as part of the learning process, not an endpoint.

Cultivating a Growth Mindset

Entrepreneurial managers champion a “GROWTH” mindset, promoting continuous learning and development within their teams. Research shows that organizations that embrace a growth mindset are 47% more likely to foster innovation.

At Microsoft, under the leadership of Satya Nadella, the company shifted from a rigid culture to one that embraced open-source technology and cloud computing. This cultural transformation helped propel Microsoft’s market cap to over $2.5 trillion, largely due to the success of its Azure cloud platform, which now generates over $75 billion annually.

Other Attributes of Successful Entrepreneurs

I’ve found several more key attributes separate great entrepreneurs from the rest:

Encouraging Ownership: When managers adopt an entrepreneurial approach, they inspire their teams to take ownership and accountability. This leads to better decision-making and outcomes.

Risk Tolerance: Entrepreneurs are comfortable with uncertainty, often balancing calculated risks with strategic foresight.

Visionary Thinking: Entrepreneurs often see opportunities where others don’t. Companies led by visionary founders have a 30% higher valuation on average.

Customer-Centric Focus: Understanding customer needs is at the heart of entrepreneurial success. Founders who consistently engage with their customers see 60% faster growth.
